History & Development
Origins (1966-1977): • The original Bronco was introduced in 1966 as a compact off-road vehicle to compete with the Jeep CIJ and International Harvester Scout. • It was designed as a no-frills, rugged 4x4 SUV aimed at the growing market for recreational off-road vehicles. The first-generation Bronco was based on the chassis of the Ford Falcon and featured a simple, boxy design with • a removable rear roof section and fold-down windshield. Second Generation (1978-1979): • In 1978, Ford introduced the second-generation Bronco, which was larger and more comfortable than its predecessor. • It was based on the Ford F-Series truck platform and offered more interior space and amenities. • However, this generation was short-lived, lasting only until 1979, due to the arrival of the more compact and fuel-efficient Ford Bronco II. Bronco II (1983-1990): • The Bronco II was a compact SUV introduced in 1983 as a smaller and more fuel-efficient alternative to the full-size Bronco. • It shared its platform with the Ford Ranger pickup truck and was designed to compete with the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer and other compact SUVs. • Despite its popularity, the Bronco II faced safety concerns due to its shorter wheelbase and higher center of gravity, leading to its discontinuation in 1990. Hiatus and Revival (2020-present): • After the discontinuation of the Bronco II, Ford did not have a direct replacement in its lineup for over two decades. • In 2020, Ford revived the Bronco nameplate with the sixth-generation model, which was heavily inspired by the original 1960s design. • The new Bronco is a mid-size SUV designed to compete with off-road-capable rivals like the Jeep Wrangler, offering removable doors and roof panels, and advanced off-road capabilities. Throughout its history, the Ford Bronco has been known for its rugged, no-nonsense design and off-road capabilities. Its revival in 2020 capitalized on the nostalgia and reputation of the original Bronco while incorporating modern technology and features, appealing to both longtime fans and new customers seeking a capable and adventurous SUV.
