History and Development
Origins (1982-1983) The Ranger was introduced in 1983 as a replacement for the Ford Courier, a small pickup truck that was essentially a rebadged Mazda model. The Ranger was designed and developed by Ford to better compete in the compact truck segment. First Generation (1983-1992) The first-generation Ranger featured a traditional body-on-frame construction and was available with two-wheel or four-wheel drive. It offered a choice of four-cylinder and V6 gasoline engines. This generation established the Ranger as a popular compact truck in the North American market. Second Generation (1993-1997) In 1993, the Ranger received a significant redesign with a more aerodynamic exterior, updated engines, and improved safety features. This generation also saw the introduction of the Ranger Splash, a monochromatic exterior styling option aimed at younger buyers.
Third Generation (1998-2011) The third-generation Ranger debuted in 1998 with a more modern and aggressive styling. It featured updated engines, including a new 4.0-liter V6 option, and improved suspension and braking systems. This generation also saw the introduction of the Ford Ranger EV, an electric version of the truck, in 1998. Pause in North American Production (2011-2018) In 2011, Ford ceased production of the Ranger for the North American market due to declining sales and a shift in consumer preferences towards larger trucks. However, the Ranger continued to be produced and sold in other global markets. Fourth Generation (2019-present) After an 8-year hiatus, Ford reintroduced the Ranger in North America for the 2019 model year. This fourth-generation model is based on the global Ranger platform and features a more modern design, updated engines (including a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost option), and improved safety and technology features.
Fifth Generation (2024 - Present) Boasts a bolder design, a revamped interior with more space, and new engine options. It offers a 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 engine with 270 horsepower or a muscular 2.7L EcoBoost V6 with 315 horsepower. Both pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission. With improved towing capacity (up to 7,500 pounds) and a comfortable cabin, the 2024 Ranger is a strong contender in the midsize truck market.
