Ford — Escape
The Ford Escape is a compact crossover SUV manufactured and marketed by Ford Motor Company since 2000. Introduced as a model year 2001 vehicle, the Escape was designed jointly by Ford and Mazda, with some models being produced on the same production line as the Mazda Tribute. Now in its fourth generation for the 2020 model year, the Ford Escape remains one of the company's best-selling vehicles in the highly competitive compact crossover segment. It has consistently been praised for its roomy and versatile interior, available all-wheel drive capability, and strong safety ratings. Over its nearly 25-year production run so far, the Escape has undergone several major redesigns to keep it technologically updated and aligned with changing consumer preferences in the growing compact SUV market.
Ford — Escape
History and Origins
The Ford Escape made its debut in 2000 as a 2001 model year vehicle. It was one of the earliest entries in the compact crossover SUV segment, arriving at a time when truck-based SUVs like the Ford Explorer were extremely popular. The Escape was jointly developed by Ford and Mazda, with Ford leading the design and Mazda providing some platform components and manufacturing facilities. The Escape shared its CD2 platform and many components with the Mazda Tribute. This platform-sharing alliance helped keep development costs down for both automakers. Ford aimed the Escape at buyers who wanted SUV versatility and a raised seating position but with better fuel economy and smoother on-road manners compared to truck-based SUVs. Its unibody car-based construction and four-wheel independent suspension delivered those attributes. The first generation Escape featured front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations powered by a 2.0L Zetec 4-cylinder or 3.0L Duratec V6 engine. It had ample cargo space and an available hybrid model joined the lineup in 2004. Over its life cycle, the Escape has been freshened and redesigned several times to keep up with the rapidly evolving crossover competition. But its original mission of providing SUV functionality with carlike drivability in a compact, affordable package has remained intact as the model transitioned through first, second, third and fourth generations.
