Ford — Expedition

The Ford Expedition is a full-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) built by Ford Motor Company. Introduced for the 1997 model year, the Expedition was Ford's first full-size SUV offering after the Bronco was discontinued. Now in its fourth generation as of the 2018 model year, the Expedition is derived from the Ford F-150 pickup truck platform and shares many mechanical similarities. The Expedition has been produced at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, Kentucky since its debut. Over its production run, it has been offered in several trim levels ranging from lower-end XLT models to more luxury-oriented King Ranch and Platinum trims. Three engine options have been available including a 4.6L V8, 5.4L V8, and the current 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6. With three-row seating for up to 8 passengers and a truck-based body-on-frame design, the Expedition competes in the full-size, non-commercial SUV segment against rivals like the Chevrolet Suburban/GMC Yukon XL, Nissan Armada, and newly reintroduced Jeep Wagoneer. A long-wheelbase Expedition EL/MAX model with over a foot of extra length has also been produced.

History and Development

The Ford Expedition was developed in the early 1990s as Ford's first full-size SUV offering to compete with the Chevrolet Suburban and other large SUVs. Its development followed the discontinuation of the smaller Ford Bronco in 1996. The first generation Expedition was introduced for the 1997 model year. It was based on the same architecture as the F-150 pickup and was offered with a 4.6L V8 or 5.4L V8 engine. Both two-door and four-door body styles were available initially. For 1999, the two-door version was dropped due to low sales. In 2003, the second generation arrived with updated styling, a freshened interior, and newly available electronic amenities like power folding third row seats. The third generation debuted in 2007 bringing a more modern design, improved safety features, and increased capabilities. The 5.4L V8 carried over while a new 3.5L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 joined the lineup in 2015. The current fourth generation Expedition entered production for 2018. It moved to an aluminum body constructed using rivets and adhesives to increase rigidity and reduce weight. The 3.5L EcoBoost V6 continues as the sole engine option. Throughout its run, the Expedition has proven very popular with families, contractors, and fleets desiring maximum passenger/cargo space and towing capacity in a full-size SUV body style. Over 2 million have been sold since its 1997 launch.
